Why You Should Carry a Gun

I got this in an email and think you should see it too if it hasn’t made it’s way to your inbox. I can guarantee you that I will never be a victim of a crime. I will be the target of a crime, but the real victim will be the individual targeting me.

My old grandpa said to me “son, there comes a time in every man’s life
when he stops bustin’ knuckles and starts bustin’ caps and usually it’s
when he becomes too old to take an ass whoopin’.”

I don’t carry a gun to kill people.
I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I don’t carry a gun to scare people.
I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m paranoid.
I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m evil.
I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the
world.

I don’t carry a gun because I hate the government.
I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m angry.
I carry a gun so that I don’t have to spend the rest of my life hating
myself for failing to be prepared.

I don’t carry a gun because I want to shoot someone.
I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and
not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m a cowboy.
I carry a gun because, when I die and go to heaven, I want to be a
cowboy.

I don’t carry a gun to make me feel like a man.
I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the
ones they love.

I don’t carry a gun because I feel inadequate.
I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am
inadequate.

I don’t carry a gun because I love it.
I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful
to me.

Police Protection is an oxymoron. Free citizens must protect themselves.
Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the
crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

Personally, I carry a gun because I’m too young to die and too old to
take an ass whoopin’.

  1. I’ll answer her apprent question – support your local police department. Do you need to provide your owe sewage as well?
    NY-David

  2. David..Apparently you don’t know how to spell..LOL Also what will you do when your local police are at home trying to protect their own? You better be able to defend yourself and the best way to do that is to have a gun or some kind of weapon unless you are Bruce Lee. There may come a day when you call 911 and get no answer….so I suggest you be prepared to protect you and yours.

  3. Carol,
Thanks for the spelling tip. Without my glasses, I’m nearly blind. While I certainly appreciate many individuals right to carry a gun and support it as such, I don’t view it as an option for me, personally. I view the NYPD as the world’s finest and in case they don’t respond, my baseball bat is handy.
    NY-David

  4. Let’s try to stick to relevant, ad hominem free discussion on these issues as we debate. We all make spelling and grammar errors and we shouldn’t use that as a basis of argument.

  5. David,…NYPD are the world’s finest, I agree! Also glad to hear you have a baseball bat as that will certainly come in handy some day.
Also I can’t see much without my glasses either and I apologize for the spelling comment. Have a nice day.

  6. When a crime happens to you or your loved ones

A gun in hand is better than a cop on the phone.

  7. Thats brilliant to have a baseball bat against some thug with a gun??What are you going to bat the bullets well i hope your a good hitter!!! lol

  8. This is a prome example of people not understanding what the police department is for. According to the court system and judges it is not the responsibility of the police to protect you they are to protect the populas in general. another words after the guy kills you when you miss him with the bat they will try to keep him from killing somebody else. It is a pretty sad person that is too lazy and complacent to protect oneself and family.
A crimanal is kicking in your door with the intent to kill you pick up the phone and call 911 so they know where the crime seen will be or pickup a gun to protect yourself. your choice victim or not.

  9. Owning a firearm is a right of every sane American. I feel safer knowing that my buddies in my back yard and across the street have major firepower.

As I get older I may buy a 50 caliber automatic weapon or a trench gun. Right now I will depend on my buddies, my Bowie knife and the police to help me out.

If a person is a hot head or depressed it is not a good idea for that individual to own a gun. If a person really doesn’t want to kill 1000 assailants to save his own life then a gun might not be right. Fortunately, we live in a Constitutional Republic that allows us to choose our manner of life without too many restrictions.

    God Bless America,

    Tj

  10. For every one crime committed with a gun, there are 100 crimes stopped with the legal use of a gun within the USA. All States with open carry laws have less crime.
Countries that have banned guns, russia, cambodia, turkey, China, etc, have ended up killing millions of their citizens within the following years.

Guns and cash spell freedom for the law abiding citizen.

  11. I guess David in NYC will be smacking the bullets away from his family as the others with guns will finish off the shooter with a shot of our own to their head. Compromise done!!! One side of the story!!!! Also, cops respond to investigate after an incident, such as a call to 911 that someone is trying to break into my house, we don’t have the manpower to get there. Call back, the intruder is now dead, the entire force shows up, situation dealt with by homeowner now, too late. America needs changes, but the answer is surely not Obama/ Biden.

  12. When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

  13. Growing up usually teaches you some truth along the way. When 16 and w6rking at a furniture and appliance store I asked a young man that worked there why he quit the police force in our small town of 17,000. He said, they would go in to inspect a burglary and rip the place off too and write it down in the report as if the buglars did it. well it was half right. He also said half of the men were into wife swapping and the other half were alcoholics. He had to get out, the corruption was too much. 8 years ago some girl asked me at work if I could fix her grandpas satellite card to get all the channels, I said yea, and proceeded to do so. Well during that times they were going down weekl. Then one friday night at around midnight the lady called , all worried , voice quivering, saying the grandfather was upset, . I told her bring them by tommarrow and I’ll fix them. Well 10 mins.later , grandpa called. now this man did not buy from me. he bought from the lady. She gave him my phone number,m a no no. He ranted about a gaurantee, money back. Then he said, do you know who I am, and what I can do to you? I told him the same thing and hung up. Never touched their stuff again. Well 3 yrs later, I picked it backup for a so called friend, trouble is this friend was working for grandpa. I got busted, felony, found out grandpa was a high ranking sherriff in this county. He was just waiting for the right time to get me back. See the corruption, he walks free. As I waited to be booked in, the sherriff behind the desk asked me, what are you in for, I told him. He bellered out laughing, geesh I have two deputy buddies the next county over that do cards for satellite all the time. Corruption. It is sickening.

  14. Don’t bring a baseball bat to a gunfight. Ever.

  15. I have to provide my own sewage. And I don’t merely own a gun. I own more than a dozen. There will be bloodshed when the idiots come to part me from them. They will part me from my flesh. Then you all can have your utopia without me.

  16. Amen Gary, Remember…Rebellion to tyrants is Obedience to God!

  17. Hey Gary,

Ditto here, with no respect to Rush. After all, rush is never right. Slow & steady, get me ready, Lord.

    -yo

  18. Leave these idiot liberals alone. Let them carry a baseball bat to a gun fight. Sooner or later someone will blow their ass away and we’ll have one less left wing – to tell us how we should live our lives. Carter like the damn fool he is, and always will be, allowed the yellow cowards that fled to Canada back in to this country. Trouble is, a lot of them ended up breeding. They’re a large part of the reason for the mess we’re in!

  19. lol cop’s, Friend of mine was having issues with a group of registered child molester’s, Messing with him and his family for about two weeks, He did not have his fire arm’s at his home at the time, These ppl would pull in every night late, beat on his home looking in windows. Why him and his kids his wife was sleeping . every night, He called the SHERIFF telling them name’s but the cops could not do nothing they could no find these ppl on the country roads, so ONE NIGHT, HE CALLED ME UP I GOT THERE, HE CALLED 911 cop’s SAID they would send a car out but the ppl left . So i got on the phone said for every night for two week’S the SHERIFF was to pick these ppl up, they have failed to do so what can this man do to protect his family , i asked if they come back can he shoot them, 911 said shoot on site if they pull back in the drive way, the cop’s did get these ppl till 8 months later on other charges,

  20. took 8 months to bust these registerd little boy child molester’s on B@E AND ENTERING charges along with trying to bet cops up with base ball bats and knifes, they did about 9 months in jail and the cops set them free , these kind of ppl dont care if the go to prison, but you know what they know my friend has the right to shoot them on site now

  21. IF THEY SHOW UP ON HIS LAND

  22. I LIVE around trash meth heads crack heads , pill junkies, live on a big farm with alot of buildings, full of 200 years of family history for 60 classic hot rod cars in buildings, took building’s full of real old wood work, many rare old tractors, to a million $ worth of tools, and vintage harleys and parts, I know alot of these ppl, i have no issues with theft, why they all know ill SHOOT THEM if i Caught them stealing know questions asked,

  23. To David,
Now about NYPD being the finest cops in the world,
I think u really need to open ur eyes and see how many criminal acts that these guys do.
I am for any Police officer who tows the line and is an honest cop,but you have to convince the world that they are good.I am willing to bet that cops who bend the law for their own personal gain ,weither it is for money or a promotion, i would say the bad out weight the good. Most abuse their attority

  24. NYPD the best?
I know this sounds racist, but I suspect that most African Americans there are not so trusting of the NYPD. Just a guess.

  25. Gun registration is a trap folks. Once they know what you have and how many you have your goose is cooked cause they just waltz in with the right excuse
and take away what you rightfully own.

  26. I see the state of this world and your country through the eyes of a former New Zealand Police Officer. Our country is as liberal and left wing as it comes and I hate it for that.
I see the state youre country is in and I feel sorry for the suffering of the masses of decent folk not responsible for the chaos.
I dont need a reason to carry a gun but the laws of our former liberal lesbian prime minister forbids it even as an officer of the law.
I just hope that in the cataclysm that is approaching someone introduces her and every other tree-hugging homo on this planet to the barrel of a 9mm.

I see the state of the United States and cant help but think “we are next” …

  28. Well, David. Yes I do provide my own sewer AND my own drinking water and believe it or not my own heat. Man I must be super human or something huh? What is going to happen to these poor saps when the sewer pumps lose power and they can’t get water from the tap any more? God help em. Owning a gun is part of being prepared and David, you are the farthest thing from being prepared, and sorry to say but some day you may wish you didn’t hate us law abiding citizens owning guns so much.

  29. quote – ” I’ll answer her apprent question – support your local police department. Do you need to provide your owe sewage as well?
    NY-David ”

    David,

Down here in Texas, were there is still some independence, I do have to provide my own sewage. It is called a septic system. Unlike the yanks up north, down here we don’t expect anyone to cover our ass.

  30. I’m glad to hear that there are people like Gary, besides myself, who agree that they will never take our guns from us. Long live the 2nd Amendment and STOP HR 45!!

  31. One more thing I would like to mention. How can we trust someone who does not care about our families to protect our families. My brother had an instance where he sold a car to a guy. Guy found out that he sold it to him over priced. So he sent his punk druggy son to “pay him a visit in which he said ” it will be trick or treat on you MF. (threat) He shows up at my brother’s store in a black SUV an jumps out with two other guys and storms into the store with his hand behind his back. (Immediate life-threat) He comes onto his property and comes up to him. My brother grabs his handgun cocks it and pputs it to his face and tells him to get the hell out or he shoots. The kid never pulls his hand out from behind his back. Calls the cops, who are dirty, and they take his gun are charge him with brandishing a firearm, which was dropped bcuz of false claim. They take his gun and turn the criminal into the victim. If people want to rely on cops then go ahead and wait for them to arrive while the damn criminals are raping, killing or stealing everything you own. Just make sure you tell the cops everything that happened, no one is safe with this justice system. While the libs swing their bats in the dark I go out guns blazing!

  32. Doug,
I never said anything about hating anyone with a gun. Truth be said, if you were on my block, you’d be my best friend.
    Travis,
God bless you and your septic system. I can’t dig one in NYC and wouldn’t want to for fear of what I might dig up. It’s not a question about expecting anyone to cover you butt, but that you probably had the option and took the best route. I pay taxes and get good water and a kick-butt police department. Best deal, if you ask me. Not perfect, but it works.
    NY-David

  33. I really don’t know why I would need a gun, it may get me into trouble.

I have a protector and placer that takes care of me where ever I am at all times.

Af course each can do as they like or feel they need.

I am 71 years of age and hjave never had a need for a weapon, and do not now!
I do understand that we live in a wicked and evil world

But that is not a new thing!

The days are evil! and weapons will not change that fact onwe bit…

  34. I myself would rather be dead than kill another

Wouldn’t it be nice if all felt this way,

it would be a different world…..

    A Benevolent New World Order

  35. When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

  36. Friends,
843 of my Koch relatives have faught in Wars of this Nation beginning with the civil war 1863 My Father William P Koch served in the Navy second World War

It seems eveery generatio only has war to look foward to!

    When will this insanity end?

    I think Soon!

  37. If a criminal is convected of murder then i say He just convected himself to ther same fate death. “Period”

of course alol cases should be judged separately and all circumstances considered..

This is the way it will be done… future tense

    So it goes!

  38. 100% of the people should not own guns, just like 100% of the people should not drive cars. If you do not like guns and prefer to use a baseball bat for your protection, more power to you (good luck). I am just so sick of people that prefer baseball bats trying to force me to carry a bat as well. STOP TRYING TO MAKE MY DECISIONS FOR ME!!!!

  39. The constitution permits ownership of arms for what I consider obvious reasons (personal defense, check and balance against tyranny). In a rural area it is a tool as necessary as a chainsaw, when well-intentioned police are an hour away. The new administration swore an oath to preserve, protect and defend that document, let’s demand that they do.

  40. When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

And NY-David, do you have the sewage department wipe your butt for you or do you have to do that yourself?

The Police work hard and I appreciate what they do. But they are not able to protect you. The Police usually are there after the crime has been committed to try to pick up the pieces.

  41. Better to die on your feet than live on your knees.

  42. The argument here, as with many issues, is urban versus rural. Or another way to view is “those who expect someone else to provide for them” versus “those who provide for themselves”.

I live 10 minutes from a major Interstate Highway and Wal-Mart, but it takes the local Sherriff over 45 minutes to respond in the rural area where I live. To be clear, I do not expect them to respond as an urban municipal police force in the average 3 minutes. I am not willing to pay more taxes to incease the number of deputies available, as this is inefficient use of tax revenue.

I know my neighbors and they know I am armed. Most criminals [or would be] know this and steer clear of preying on our properties. This is not the case in places like England where the citizens are preyed upon with no way of personal defense and police that are outmatched and not feared by those with intent of malice.

  43. Hi NY-David, your first off-the-cuff response seemed pretty condescending, but your later responses are quite reasonable. I wish you the best after the economic collapse. If you can make it out to New Mexico, you’re welcome to couchsurf at the Don Nowhere Shebeen while you learn some survival skills. Peace — jc

  44. Steve J,
That was one of the most sensible arguments I see on this post. When I lived in Central Wisconsin, I had a rifle, a shotgun and .22 pistol. For that matter I also had a septic tank and a wood stove. None of these are practical or cost effective where I live now (NYC), yet I don’t believe they should be limited or removed.
    NY-David

  45. Time for me to go find a bat for Ryan to carry…
    NY-David

  46. David! I hope New Yorkers get their rights back!

Unlike, NY, where there x0,000 officers …. I live in an area where there are only a few on duty in the entire county!

“support your local police department. Do you need to provide your owe sewage as well?”

I do support my local police department … if they need help, in .3 seconds I can get the first piece of copper jacketed lead heading towards whatever they need support on.

Plus, in the middle of nowhere, when seconds count … help is only minutes away (hopefully).

  47. #
    > Sumner, on April 14th, 2009 at 10:01 pm Said:
    > I myself would rather be dead than kill another

Hey Sumner, Looking at the statistics from x years of ccw data … Out of 2.5 million reported ‘gun pulls’ by CCW holders, they won 98.x % of the time …. and the vast majority of the time, just showing the gun makes the ‘social event’ / ‘community organizer fund seizure’ end quickly without bloodshed. If you are trapped in your bedroom, just the racking of the shottie or the click of the safety on AK typically gets bad guys moving the other direction.

IF they pursue the matter, you can always keep the gun empty and let them kill you. But your odds are better than that :-)

  48. Wake up America!! I personally own a gun and bullets.
I will use it to protect myself and/or my family. The criminals
will always have weapons and American’s are foolish to think
they need to get rid of them. Oh, I know, tell the intruder to
wait a minute, you have to call 911 and let the local police department handle the situation. No thank you, break into
my home and you’ll be seeing your maker a lot sooner than
you planned. Thank you. God Bless America!

  49. I live in Texas, and recently went to get my CWL. I have a lovely 20 gauge shotgun I can handle, and about 50 boxes of ammunition (I bought one every time I got a paycheck until I got to 50 boxes). I’m a single mother with two boys. We all take classes with a nice ex-police woman who trains the police and also civilians.

I wish I didn’t feel like I needed to have a gun at home to feel safe. I don’t own a handgun yet, but will as soon as I can afford it. I want a nice one… I’m told a Glock is easy to conceal and will be shopping for one.

I am a Democrat, liberal as they come… but I am also a woman alone in a house with two kids. The world seems more dangerous today than it did 10 years ago. People are more likely to pull over into your lane than to wait for you to go by. People are more likely to find a reason to hate you than to make you their neighbor. People you would never expect seem to be more likely to vicitmize you than to help you out, or even leave you alone, unless you have something threatening to show them.

I keep my shotgun by my bed each night, and use the safety lock during the day. Nothing bad has happened to us yet (knock on wood), and hopefully nothing ever will. Hopefully, I will never need to shoot anyone, as I would really rather not. But if someone comes into my home, I will not hesitate to blow their criminal and unlucky little brains all over my walls to protect my family.

I hope for the best, but will continue to prepare for whatever may come our way. I teach my boys the same. I hope I am just a little paranoid when I feel that the way people live in America is on a downward spiral. I don’t let it take over my life… but I will not ignore that feeling. If I’m wrong, then no one is hurt, and no one is even incovenienced. If I’m right, then maybe my family will have some hope of making our way to a safer place, or to food and shelter, and good drinking water.

I’m a teacher, and a part-time government employee. I hope President Obama has the answers that will repair the hopelessness and desperation I see in people who have no job and are losing their homes and livelihoods. But if it is too late, then I hope I am as ready as I can reasonably be for whatever comes to pass.

  50. I live near a small city on the Oregon coast. One day, walking down on the beach where I often go a homeless man living in the trees above the shoreline accosted me. He accused me of violating his vagrant camping area and threatened to kill me. I ran away from the man down the beach a long ways to get away from him and avoid an altercation, then walked up the highway to return home. Upon returning home I immediately called the county sheriff’s office, worried that this man might attack others. They told me it wasn’t their area of responsibility and made me call the State Police. The State Police NEVER showed up. At all.
Flash forward a year. I was working, with my family, at a camp in the mountains. We had occasional problems with campers due to drinking and drug issues. The county sheriff’s office was supposed to patrol through our area. They seldom did. When we called for emergencies it took them 25 MINUTES to get to the scene. One time we had a armed person on meth attacking campers. A group of EMTs (trained in restraint techniques) held the man down until an officer from one of the closer towns showed up (the sheriffs showed up later).
Needless to say, I got my CCW after the first incident and plan to renew it FOREVER. “When SECONDS count, the police are only MINUTES away.” We can not put the responsibility of protecting our families on anyone, and I consider myself fairly pro-police. Nations come and go, as history shows, and there is no one but you who cares enough to keep your family secure.

  51. David,
I understand why you feel the way you do….you are from hillary’s state….just call her when trouble arrives on your doorstep. It would take a complete idiot to feel the way you do. OR maybe you want to call your obamer guy….he will help you. What stupidity there is in this world!!!!

  52. Patti, for a liberal you sound like you have a great deal of sense! Your words express a heartfelt tone. I’m as conservative as it comes, maybe a little to the right of Atilla the Hun. I wish you and your boys well. Your right about the way this country is changing. Very sad indeed. Maybe it is time for a revolution, a cleansing, as America needs to wake up. I hope to God it comes soon.

  55. Have any of you seen the the above photo and a few other ones put together with a list of some of the dictators over the last so 75 years. The listed dictators had the start date of the gun removal and then the date of when they started the killing and the numbers of people killed. One of the photos was asking what was going to keep your daugther safe a gun a condom or the call the police that are a mile away when she has a rapist one block from her. It also has the poem written with it. thanks
